World Desertification Day – Overcoming Drought: Sirad’s Success Story

Sirad Suldan survived one of the worst droughts to hit Somalia. In 2016, about 40% of the country’s population was food insecure due to drought. To combat the disaster, the World Bank Group and FAO assisted more than 2.1 million drought-affected rural Somalis—about 360,000 families—with livelihood support through cash-for-work programs. It helped families to purchase food, while protecting and restoring agricultural productivity and production. Watch Sirad’s success story this 2019 World Day to Combat Desertification, 25 years since the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
